Howard
Levy’s long- awaited “Harmonica out
of the Box,Vol.1” is finally here! Howard
performs and explains 12 new original compositions,
each in a different key, all on ONE diatonic
harmonica in the Key of C! The music is in many
styles- Blues, Jazz, Swing, Tango, Funk, East
Indian classical, Klezmer, and Flamenco. Howard
plays the tunes and improvises on each one, to
the accompaniment of stellar guitarist Chris
Siebold, and percussionist Miles Levy. There
is an explanation for each piece- how it was
written, how to improvise on it, etc. There
are lead sheets, as well as mix minus versions
of 7 of them. The dvd is a full 90 minutes in
length.
The material on this cd is all totally
new, and does not revisit any of the material from
Howard’s “New Directions For Harmonica” dvd
from 1992.
At the
film shoot, Howard also recorded another entire
dvd of teaching material, including:
scales, arpeggios, blues and jazz licks in
all 12 keys
a clinic on tuning and adjusting your harmonica
bending and overblowing in tune
rhythmic breathing rudiments, and much more.
This dvd, “Harmonica
out of the Box, Vol.2”, is scheduled for
release in 2007.

Here's the performance of "Evanston Tango" from
the new DVD, Out of the Box Vol 1. All played on
a C harp, the tune is in F#m.

This is at St. Sabina Church in Chicago. The priest
is Father Michael Phleger, an amazing man who has
brought up the level of the whole neighborhood through
his community and spiritual work. (I forgot to put
any info or titles on this.) Michael Drayton is the
music director. This was really heavy. Before I played
this, I was playing other things with the band and
there were people dancing and falling on the floor,
etc, right in front of me.

on Studio Jams
In June 2004, I played for the BET show Studio Jams
with guitarist Dominick Miller, bassist Doug Wimbish,
drummer Will Calhoun, keyboardist Nick Pappas, and
percussionist Emedin Rivera. We played 4 tunes of
Dominick’s and one of mine. Then, the highlight
for me was a free improv where we got really loose.
Again, I really look forward to hearing this stuff
when it airs.
